Valencia is an ideal city to be visited by bike. A broad network of bike lanes throughout the entire city controls the bike traffic and protects cyclists from automobiles. In this article you'll find tips and routes for bike lovers in Valencia.

Valencia is an ideal city to be visited by bike. A broad network of bike lanes throughout the entire city controls the bike traffic and protects cyclists from automobiles. On the other hand, there are other factors that favour the use of bicycles in Valencia; for example, the city is almost entirely flat, with hardly an important slope; also, the distances between the city centre and the main tourist attractions are virtually non existent, and the fact that Valencia has an enviable weather, providing the cyclist with sunny days and warm temperatures most of the time.

In Valencia, there are several businesses offering the bike rental service, either per hour or days, as well as the city council, which manages a public service for bike rental called ‘Valenbisi’. There are also some tourist companies that offer bike tours for families and groups.

The possibilities that bicycle touring offers are many and diverse, ranging from an urban ride that allows us to visit this historic sites and Valencia’s most representative districts, to routes that last several hours through the outskirts of the city to ride along the seashore, getting deeper into the fields and its fertile region to enjoy the peaceful purity of the Albufera Natural Park.

Among the different routes that bicycle touring in Valencia offers, we are proposing two options: the first one describes a tour around Valencia’s historic centre; the second one, a cycling excursion that connects the City of Arts and Sciences to the beaches near the Albufera.

A tourist bike ride throughout Valencia’s historic centre

The tour start at Paseo de la Alameda where we will cross over through the Puente de las Flores (Bridge Flower) to connect with the bike lane leading to the Puerta del Mar (Sea Gate) and the city centre. When we get to the Parterre Gardens, where the statue of king Jaume I is and with the Tourist Office in the corner, we will take the bike lane along calle de la Nave. Once we reach and pass the Plaza del Patriarca, we will turn right and then left to reach the Gonzalez Marti Ceramic Museum and Palacio del Marqués de Dos Aguas, with its impressive baroque style gate.

Next, we should walk along calle Abadía, carefully crossing over to San Vicente and turning right on Plaza de la Reina, where we can visit both the cathedral and the Tower of Miguelete. Still on calle Abadía, we have to look for a pedestrian street where the Tower of Santa Catalina stands, a nice place to rest and have a horchata at one of the city’s most renowned horchaterias. On your left, you’ll now find the Plaza Redonda, followed by the Plaza Doctor Collado, where our trip will end and you’ll be able to rest and take a nice shower at Hôme Youth Hostel, or maybe go for a walk around and see the Plaza del Ayuntamiento (City Council Square), Lonja de la Seda or the Mercado Central (Central Market).

Ver Valencia by bike: city center tour bigger map

A cycling excursion that connects the City of Arts and Sciences to the beaches near the Albufera

The excursion begins at the City of Arts and Sciences, that we can reach cycling from the city centre following the beautiful parks along the old Turia’s riverbed. Once we get to the City of Arts and Sciences, we ride on the bike lane that begins at the roundabout next to the Agora and goes parallel to the highway until the district of Nazaret. This part will allow us to get deeper into a fertile region so typical of Valencia. We cut through Nazaret following the bike lane, and we’ll ride close to the port until we reach a roundabout where the access to the port and the Yacht Club are located.

We will then cross Turia’s old riverbed to get to an area in which many amateur fishermen set foot. From this point we will enter Pinedo’s promenade, that runs parallel to the seashore. Once we get to the Cruz de Piedra (Stone Cross), we can stop for lunch at a local restaurant or carry on until El Saler beaches, where there are several picnic areas available. The excursion finishes when we arrive to the Albufera’s Natural Park, with various dirt roads along which the park can be walked.

This excursion lasts approximately two hours, regardless of the stops we decide to make along the way.

Ver Valencia en Bici : ruta el Saler en un mapa más grande

The Benicassim Internacional Festival is an independent music festival that Benicasssim (Castellón) holds for more than fifteen years, in the middle of July, although in the begining took place during the first week of that month. This festival is as well known as FIB Heineken, being that beer brand its sponsor for several years.

Nine days of sun, beaches, friends and good music going with other activities like cinema, theater plays and fashion shows.

It has a far-reaching internacional repercussion with a great european renown and attracting hundreds of neighbouring countries visitors, quantity that is being improved every year.
Things have changed a lot since, in 1995, 8,000 people were attending the concerts of The Charlatans, Supergrass or The Planetas, among others, in the Benicassim Velódromo. The next edition had electronic music too and afterwards it was extended from 3 to 5 days, adding a cinema and music cycle. Due to the more of 18,000 visitors it was decided to move to the outskirts, where is being held from then. With such a huge place, each year more awnings could be provided. The number of attendants were raising at the same time that new artists were playing there and in its 10th aniversarie in 2004, the FIB had artists Duch as The Cure, Radiohead, Placebo or Oasis.

After the last year success, where the Festival had more than 200.000 people, this new edition the organizers have excelled themselves with the introduction of the mythical singer-songwriter Bob Dylan as headline for this year edition that will take place in July (12 to 15) as well as Stone Roses ( they will join again after more than 15 years), Noel Gallagher, Florence + the Machine, or David Guetta and many others. But Bob Dylan´s presence is a luxury, being cosidered as one of the most influyent song-writers and singers in the XX century, with such outstanding songs as Like a Rolling Stone or Blowin´in the Wind.

David Guetta incorporation has carried some controversy and many of faithful FIBers have expressed their disagreement.Guetta´s incorporation was some time after knowing that the Primavera Sound ( hold this time in Barcelona, first days of May) will include Rufus Wainwright for this edition.

But the FIB has everything and for everyone, so it will have such different bands As La Casa Azul, Jero Romero, Bombay Bicycle Club, The Vaccines and many others. Are you going to miss it?

The Holy Week is a religious festivity that commemorates Jesus Christ’s Passion, Death and Resurrection through faith manifestations or processions that have previously been arranged by a brotherhood, or guild. Each of them may carry around a paso, that usually illustrates religious images from the Passion of Christ. It is a very celebrated holiday in Spain, so much in fact that 16 celebrations in 13 different Spanish provinces have been considered Fiestas of International Tourist Interest. The peculiarity of Valencia’s Maritime Holy Week comes from its close relationship to the sea and because it was originated by fishermen and sailor men when, on these dates they celebrate even today a tight schedule of events year after year in Valencia’s Maritime District, comprising the neighbourhoods of El Grao, el Cabañal and Cañamelar, among others, where the city embraces the sea.

Although its exact origin is unknown, there are some proofs that indicate that it existed already on the 15th Century, but it won’t start developing into what we know today until the 20th century, when some of the guilds introduced groups of sculptures, imitated in the following years by many other guilds. After stopping duringSpain’s Civil War, it was resumed in 1941, with the birth of several new guilds.

Valencia’s Maritime Holy Week maintains traditions that are linked to its sea-related origin and that differentiate it from other Spanish celebrations, such as the Resurrection Parade (where all the seriousness from the Passion is gone, resulting in an explosion of joy and colours throughout the official itinerary), the best andas in the World (referring to Martín Dominguez’s article in which he points out the fact that the images are carried on their chests) or the touch of Glory (at 12 am on Holy Saturday, Jesus Christ’s resurrection is loudly celebrated, as it is often the case in the city of Valencia).

It is for all these reasons that the Holy Week is an excellent time to discover some of the eldest traditions in the Valencian Community, beginning on Palm Sunday (Passion Sunday), that will take place on April 1st this year, and lasts for 8 days. Apart from Valencia’s Maritime Holy Week, Sagunto’s Holy Week, with a live representation of the Passion, as well as Azira’s, where the celebration is quite intense, are both considered fiestas of National Tourist Interest.

Best priced hostels in the heart of Valencia

Both vintage hostels that Hôme Hostels has in Valencia, Hôme Backpackers and Hôme Youth Hostel, are low cost hostels in the heart of Valencia’s historic city centre, in the Barrio de El Carmen, just a few minutes walk to the city’s most emblematic monuments and well connected by means of public transport to the City of Arts and Sciences as well as to enjoy during Valencia’s Maritime Holy Week in the Maritime district, or the beaches in the city.

Enjoy a budget accommodation inValencia in an unbeatable location and do not miss a thing of what’s going on in the city during Easter or any other time.

Ask in reception in any of the Hôme Hostels about all the events that take place inValencia’s Maritime Holy Week.
